Epic Systems Solidifies Leadership in EHR Hospital Market Share
September 29, 2023
In the competitive landscape of EHR vendors, Epic Systems has significantly fortified its leadership in 2022, further solidifying its dominance over rivals like Oracle Cerner.
Epic Systems’ Expanding Influence
Epic Systems, a major play0er in the EHR sector, welcomed 83 hospitals to its network during 2022, a noteworthy addition when juxtaposed with Oracle Cerner’s addition of just 22 hospitals. With the inclusion of these hospitals, Epic integrated an additional 14,330 beds. Consequently, it now commands a significant market share, covering almost 36% of U.S. acute care hospitals.
This impressive growth is attributed to a broader trend: a significant number of hospitals and healthcare systems are re-evaluating their EHR partnerships and opting for Epic. A testament to this trend is the migration of substantial health systems, such as Emory Healthcare based in Atlanta and Memorial Hermann located in Houston, both of which transitioned from Oracle Cerner to Epic in the last year.
Supporting this shift, KLAS Research data established a marked preference among the larger health systems for Epic. From 2017 to 2022, Epic successfully onboarded 434 hospitals and added a remarkable 94,656 beds to its portfolio.
Oracle Cerner’s Market Position
Oracle Cerner, despite its long-standing presence in the sector, appears to be facing challenges in expanding its market footprint. Although the company managed to add 22 new hospitals in 2022, it lost out on 4,658 beds, primarily due to its recent focus on incorporating smaller standalone facilities into its network.
However, even with these challenges, Oracle Cerner remains a significant player. As per KLAS Research, it held a 24.9% share of the hospital market in 2022. Yet, when evaluated based on bed count, it accounted for 25.8% of the new additions during the year, whereas Epic led with an imposing 47.6%.
In conclusion, Epic Systems continues to lead the EHR hospital market landscape, capitalizing on the strategic shifts of larger institutions. Oracle Cerner, although facing challenges, remains a key player, especially among smaller entities. As the healthcare technology landscape evolves, the preferences and decisions of hospitals will be crucial in shaping the future market dynamics.
