In a recent turn of events, Gardner, Massachusetts-based Heywood Healthcare has found itself in the midst of financial turmoil, and has been quoted to say that a “lengthy electronic medical record transition” leading to the difficult decision to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The major challenges encountered during a lengthy electronic medical record (EMR) changeover were highlighted as a fundamental factor in this difficult decision.

Back in 2019, Heywood Healthcare, like several other healthcare systems in Massachusetts, chose Meditech Expanse as its EMR vendor. Meditech, headquartered in nearby Canton, Massachusetts, was the chosen solution to streamline Heywood’s digital healthcare records. Unfortunately, the transition didn’t proceed as smoothly as anticipated, contributing to the financial strain Heywood Healthcare now faces.

Even though the EMR transition has presented challenges, Heywood treatment remains committed to delivering excellent healthcare to its community. However, their efforts were further complicated when a potential merger with Worcester, Massachusetts-based UMass Memorial Health fell through in January 2023.

In an attempt to manage the situation responsibly, Heywood reached out to its vendors in an October 2 notice and said “Heywood has made every effort to keep current with vendors and pay down its debt.” “However, some vendors will be impacted by the bankruptcy filing. As a vendor, you become a creditor with a claim against Heywood for any amounts that are owed to you for goods or services provided to Heywood prior to the Petition Date (i.e., before the bankruptcy filing).”

Despite these challenges, Heywood Healthcare remains committed to its mission of providing essential healthcare services to its community. As they navigate through the complex terrain of bankruptcy and vendor relationships, they are determined to emerge stronger and continue serving the healthcare needs of Gardner and beyond.
