A recent ranking of the 30 largest U.S. health systems has revealed their online reputation scores, reflecting how patients perceive their services.

The evaluation, conducted by Reputation, a leading business-to-business online reputation management company, incorporates solicited and unsolicited patient feedback, including social media comments, to assess each health system’s standing.

Reputation’s 2023 Healthcare Reputation Report, based on over 1 million patient reviews across 200,000 physicians and hospitals, offers valuable insights into the significance of managing online reputations in the healthcare industry.

Key Insights from the Report:

The report sheds light on several noteworthy findings regarding patient reviews and the impact of online reputation:

  • Surge in Patient Reviews: Since 2020, patient reviews of hospitals have increased by an impressive 90 percent, with a 38 percent growth observed since 2021. The average hospital star rating for 2022 stands at 3.7, emphasizing the growing influence of online feedback.

  • Drivers of Positive Patient Experience: Analysis of positive reviews highlights three key factors contributing to a positive patient experience: staff, bedside manner, and physician competence. Conversely, negative reviews often cite wait times, emergency care, and pain management issues.

  • Increased Consumer Reliance on Online Reviews: Approximately 86 percent of consumers now read online patient reviews, significantly rising from 72 percent in 2022. An online reputation is a powerful form of word-of-mouth, reaching millions of individuals and influencing their healthcare decisions.
