March 24, 2023
- A recent survey by the Health Management Academy found that 47% of hospitals and health systems are using AI to address staffing and labor shortages in healthcare.
- The survey revealed that the most common areas where AI investments are made are back-office processes, clinical operations, and clinical care.
- This survey highlights AI’s potential to improve revenue cycle management processes and conversational potential to improve patient engagement.
The healthcare sector has recently seen a rapid artificial intelligence (AI) transformation with substantial effects on management, research, and patient care. According to a recent poll by the Health Management Academy, 47% of hospitals and health systems use AI to aid with staffing and labor shortages. This development underscores the rising awareness of artificial intelligence’s (AI) ability to boost efficiency, lower costs, and improve healthcare outcomes.
The Health Management Academy surveyed 40 executives from 40 leading health systems and found that nearly half are using AI to tackle workforce challenges. The survey also found that half of the executives evaluate or consider AI-based tools to combat workforce challenges. The most common areas where AI investments are made are back-office processes, clinical operations, and clinical care.
The study also emphasized AI’s potential to enhance revenue cycle management procedures. The use of AI-based tools for revenue cycle management is being evaluated or considered, according to about 78% of CEOs. This conclusion is crucial because revenue cycle management is one of the most critical aspects of healthcare operations. Hospitals and health systems can benefit financially from any advancements in this field.
Health systems are also looking into the potential of conversational AI in this area. The poll discovered that while 72% of executives claimed they were contemplating implementing conversational AI, 27% were already employing it in their health systems. Improvements in patient involvement, better provider communication, and administrative work streamlining can all be achieved with conversational AI.
According to the poll, 15% of CEOs used AI in nursing. Nurses’ workloads can be decreased, efficiency can be raised, and patient care can be enhanced with the application of AI. The use of AI in nursing is still in its infancy. Thus further study is required to weigh its potential advantages and disadvantages.
In conclusion, the survey conducted by the Health Management Academy emphasizes the expanding usage of AI in the healthcare industry, notably in managing staffing and labor shortages. The use of AI in healthcare has enormous promise, and it is anticipated that adoption will pick up speed in the years to come. However, AI’s hazards and ethical ramifications in healthcare need to be carefully considered, and the proper steps must be taken to ensure its responsible and efficient usage.
