Hackensack Meridian Health, the premier healthcare network in New Jersey, in collaboration with Carenostics, a pioneer in healthcare AI, recently clinched the Innovative Practice Award from Bio-IT World. This prestigious award celebrates exceptional technological breakthroughs and collaborations that revolutionize healthcare and life sciences research. This joint initiative has received accolades primarily for its groundbreaking contributions to clinical diagnostics.

A strategic partner of Hackensack Meridian Health, Carenostics is harnessing AI to design machine learning algorithms that can detect undiagnosed or underdiagnosed cases of kidney disease earlier than conventional methods. This ground-breaking system seamlessly merges diverse datasets, notably electronic health records, to churn out clinical suggestions to elevate patient care.

“Hackensack Meridian Health is excited to partner with Carenostics to safely advance care and provide the best patient outcomes utilizing artificial intelligence,” said Kash Patel, Chief Digital and Information Officer. “Our providers have been eager to adopt this potentially lifesaving technology to complement the essential clinical work they’re doing every day.”

This synergistic partnership has given birth to an AI tool named CKDx. This tool is programmed to analyze billions of data points, discerning intricate patterns, and subsequently offering actionable insights to healthcare providers. What sets CKDx apart is its ability to not only offer diagnostic insights but also to forecast future hospital admissions and potential cardio-renal challenges based on biomarkers found in patient records. Preliminary studies have shown its ability in detecting over half of the unreported Stage 3 kidney diseases or later stages.

“Many healthcare systems are talking about AI and how it can be used to improve care; Hackensack Meridian Health has been at the forefront of this movement,” said Kanishka Rao, Co-Founder and COO of Carenostics. “Our partnership allows us to bring Artificial intelligence into clinical practice and their workflows, to support physicians and ultimately improve patient outcomes.”

Despite the AI being less than a year old, the alliance between Hackensack Meridian Health and Carenostics is eyeing expansions to its capabilities. Their future endeavors include potential projects in other medical areas like asthma, COPD, and heart failure. This venture was among the exclusive six projects commemorated at this year’s Bio-IT World awards. The accolade was jointly received by Kash Patel, Kanishka Rao, and Carenostics’ CEO, Bharat Rao, during the Bio-IT World Conference and Expo held in Boston on May 16, 2023.
